On May 15th, the Washington Post reported that Trump disclosed classified information to the Russian Ambassador and Russian Foreign Minister during their meeting in the Oval Office. Trump was apparently boasting to the Russians about the “great intel” he was receiving every day. The leaked information had been provided to the U.S. by an ally and concerned the inner workings of ISIS. The information was of the highest classification, “code-word information,” and had even been withheld from our other allies. In a brief statement, National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster denied the Washington Post report (that has now been confirmed by CNN, Reuters, Buzzfeed, and the New York Times), saying that Trump did not discuss any “intelligence sources or methods” with the Russians. However, sources and methods were not what the Washington Post reported as the content of the classified information.

The news of Trump’s serious mishandling of classified material comes less than a week after his abrupt and still mostly unexplained firing of FBI Director James Comey. The timing between Trump firing the man leading the most in-depth investigation into possible ties between Russia and the Trump campaign, and Trump openly discussing classified national security intelligence with Russian government leaders is striking. How much more evidence or dangerous activity will it take for Congress to put partisan loyalty aside and take the Russian investigation seriously? Now more than ever, it is clear that an independent investigation (either through a special prosecutor or independent commission, or ideally both). Now, our national security may be at stake.

SCRIPT: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from Springfield.

I’m calling to express my serious concerns about Trump discussing highly classified intelligence with the Russians, jeopardizing our national security and relationship with crucial allies. Congress must step up now to protect the safety of our nation and immediately establish an independent investigation into Trump’s ties to Russia.

Thank you for your time and attention.
