Update (7/22): The House GOP is adding the $1.6 billion border wall funding to H.R. 3219, the “Make America Secure” appropriations bill package. The final vote on this set of spending allocations is expected as early as Tuesday, July 25th.
While on the campaign trail, Donald Trump repeatedly promised to build a wall along the Mexican-United States border at Mexico’s expense. There is bipartisan agreement that this wall will not deter illegal immigration–Texas Republican Rep. Will Hurd has called the wall “the most expensive and least effective way to secure the border” earlier this year–and Mexico has understandably refused to pay for the wall’s construction. However, House Republicans remain inexplicably committed to constructing this pointless wall at taxpayers’ expense. The House Appropriations Committee’s draft homeland security spending bill allocates $1.6 billion, the full amount requested by the Trump administration, to build the southern border wall. This money is only a fraction of the wall’s long-term estimated cost; an internal Homeland Security memo has predicted completing the wall will cost at least $21.6 billion.
Republicans like Trump budget chief Mick Mulvaney and Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) are now signaling they are willing to force a government shutdown if the Senate refuses to approve border wall funding. It is unacceptable that Trump and his cronies are willing to shut down the government, cutting off vital services and costing taxpayers millions of dollars to fund construction of a wall that is not necessary for border security.

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from Springfield.
I’m calling to express my strong opposition to any federal budget that funds the construction of a southern border wall. A border wall will not improve our border security and will cost taxpayers billions of dollars.
