On May 9th, Trump took the shocking step and fired James Comey, the director of the FBI and leader of the investigation into the Trump campaign’s increasingly-obvious coordination with Russia during the 2016 election.

The reasons given for firing Comey are flimsy at best. It has been reported by The New York Times that Jeff Sessions, the US Attorney General forced to recuse himself from the Russian investigation, was told by top Trump administration officials to find a reason to fire Comey. As a result, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein penned a memo to Trump stating Comey treated Hillary Clinton unfairly during the email investigation in July of 2016 and should therefore be fired. His statement is absurd given Trump’s famous and much used campaign chant, “Lock her up.”

The timing of Comey’s firing is incredibly suspicious and comes when the Russia investigation is building steam. Just a few weeks ago, Comey confirmed to the Senate that the Trump team was indeed under FBI investigation for collaborating with Russia during the election. His firing shows the Russian investigation is in crisis, and the only solution is the appointment of a special prosecutor and an independent commission.

SCRIPTS: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a concerned citizen from Springfield.

[IF CALLING DEPT of JUSTICE:] I’m calling to ask Mr. Rosenstein to appoint an independent special prosecutor to investigate Russia’s involvement with the Trump campaign and the 2016 election. His stated reasons for the firing of Comey make him look like a partisan instrument of the Trump administration and he has lost his credibility to investigate Russia. Thank you for your time and attention.

[IF CALLING HOUSE/SENATE:] I’m outraged at the firing of James Comey and I’m calling to urge [REP/SEN NAME] to push for the appointment of an independent special prosecutor to investigate Russia’s involvement with the Trump team. Comey’s firing shows the lengths Trump will go to kill the investigation into the truth. Thank you for your time and attention.
